Working on customs for Puma is always fun but this project was especially exciting. This time I got tapped to create boots for Paul Puopolo who plays for the Hawthorn Football Club. He is an AFL Multicultural Ambassador who works on the management of Multicultural talent camps and the National All Nation Cup on behalf of the league. Pauls background is Italian and since my fathers side came here in the 50s from Italy I knew from the beginning this was going to work out well.
The concept behind the boots is to illustrate Pauls Italian heritage without flooding them with too many graphics and making them overstated. We opted to use my fade print to transform the Formstripe into the Italian flag and to match this we customized the PUMA text on the medial side with the flag colors also. To make it a little more personal to Paul we added his number and initials to the back of the boot and finally in a freehand script we placed the date of the game above the Formstripe on the lateral side. As someone with a similar background it was really exciting to be a part of this special round of Football, thanks to my fam at Puma and to Paul for rocking the boots. Cheers
